The University of Vienna (20 faculties and centers, 179 fields of study, approx. 10.000 members of staff, about 90.000 students) seeks to fill two positions from June 1 2025 of a PhD student (prae doc) and a postdoctoral fellow (post doc) at the Department of Musicology.
Duration of employment: 2 years, renewable for another 2 years after interim evaluation
Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week (prae doc) / 40.0 hours/week (post doc) Salary in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §49 Salary Group B1, (3) for prae doc (~2600€ per month), (3)(b) for post doc (~4700€ per month).
Job Description: Successful applicants will work within the context of an international, interdisciplinary project on the effects of a singing-based intervention in Alzheimer’s disease patients (https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.09.25.24313991v1). The project will involve using EEG and MRI alongside behavioral measures to track patients’ music memory and general cognition and the neural underpinnings of these over time. At the University of Vienna, the successful applicants will be co-supervised by Anja-Xiaoxing Cui at the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, and Narly Golestani at the Vienna Cognitive Science Hub, and the Department of Behavioral and Cognitive Biology at the Faculty of Life Sciences. Applicants should have a strong interest in music psychology and/or cognitive neuroscience and relevant undergraduate and/or graduate degrees. They should have solid expertise in EEG and/or MRI analysis. They need to be fluent in English. Fluency in German is considered a strong asset.
The prae doc will also join a relevant doctoral school at the University of Vienna. The main goal of the doctoral school is quality assurance in PhD training and education.
As successful applicants will be working within the context of a third-party funded project, no teaching is required though should successful applicants wish to gain teaching experience they will be supported by the supervisors.
Profile: Candidates should hold a university degree commensurate with their interest in music psychology and/or cognitive neuroscience, e.g., musicology, psychology, neuroscience. They should have excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a team and an autonomous and proactive working style. Experience wit programming in Matlab, Python, R, Freesurfer, and FSL are considered strong assets.
