ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Admission to the Psychology PhD programs is competitive; applications are often reviewed in comparison with the entire applicant pool. Students are evaluated in terms of their research potential and should identify a potential research advisor (preferred advisor) in the application system. The following materials are required*:
- Application (electronic)
- Application fee ($75)
- Transcript from each college/university attended (unofficial and official copies*)
- Personal Statement
- 3 Recommendations**
- GRE (General Test is required; Subject Test is recommended)
- TOEFL/IELTS for non-native English speakers

** It is preferred that recommendations be submitted using the online application recommendation system, however if a recommender prefers to submit the recommendation on paper they should be mailed directly to the Psychology Department (see brochure above for mailing address and other details for paper recommendations.)
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Most graduate students in the Psychology Department are offered a minimum 15-hour Graduate Assistantship for up to 10 semesters. Please see links below for additional information on graduate assistantships as well as other opportunities for financial support.
APPLICATION PROCESS
After reviewing both the Psychology Department admissions brochure and the Graduate School admissions information :
1) Assemble your application materials for the online application system:
- Personal statement
- GRE scores (unofficial copies)
- TOEFL/IELTS scores (non-native English speakers only; unofficial copies)
- Unofficial copies of all college/university transcripts (and/or marksheets/degree certificates for international institutions)
- Contact information for three recommenders
- Resume (optional)
- Writing Samples (optional)
2) Complete the online application to the Graduate School
3) Request official test scores (GRE and TOEFL/IELTS (if required)) be sent to UCONN from ETS.
4) Mail official transcripts * (including any required marksheets/degree certificates for international institutions) for all colleges / universities attended to:

* Note: Please see the admissions brochure for details on when official transcripts need to be submitted, the timing is different for US institutions and international institutions.
Please Note:
- It is up to the applicant to verify that all materials have been received and that the application is complete. Application status and the status of individual documents can be viewed through the online application system.
- We do not refuse applications that are not complete at the deadline, however a significant delay in submitting application materials could affect your chances of being admitted. Committees may begin reviewing applications any time after the application deadline passes. If the application is reviewed prior to receipt of missing items, the application may not receive a second review once missing items are received.
- Our department does not have a formal "cut-off" score for the GRE.
- Interviews: The Clinical Division will formally interview their top candidates, usually in early-February; Other programs may schedule visits for applicants they are interested in admitting or for students who have been admitted, however they do not have a formal interview process; Applicants are welcome to visit the department at any time and may contact individual faculty or the program Division Heads to see if they would be able to meet with them, however a personal interview with a faculty member cannot be guaranteed until the applicant has been admitted.
- All programs are full-time on the Storrs campus; Courses are not offered online or at regional campuses.
- No program formally offers a Terminal Master’s Degree
- Prospective applicants who have not been admitted to a degree program at this University may take courses as a non-degree student although this will not guarantee admission at a later date. - Decisions are usually made by April 1; the Graduate School must approve all decisions made by the department; Applicants will be notified of the official decision via the online application system. (An email will be sent through the online system requesting that the applicant log in to the system to view the decision).
- Applicants are not required to have an undergraduate degree in Psychology however basic undergraduate-level courses in statistics, general psychology, and experimental psychology are recommended.
